Sustainable Food Wrapping

Ette Wraps & Bees Wrap

I first found out about reusable food wrapping a while back when I was scrolling through my Instagram feed. There was an advertisement for Etee Wraps and I thought that it was a great idea. A few months ago, I decided to do some research and found another brand called Bees Wrap. I wanted to compare the two brands, so I bought a pack of three from each brand off of Amazon. They both arrived in plastic free packaging. The main ingredients in both are organic cotton, tree resin, organic beeswax, and essential oils. The best part about them is that you can use them for up to six months, and when it’s time to say goodbye, they are 100% biodegradable.

Changing to reusable wrapping was a simple fix.

I pack my lunch everyday when I go to school. When looking to make changes, I realized that most of my waste was coming from food packaging. The typical lunch that I pack consists of a turkey and cheese sandwich, and an apple (preferably cut into slices). Each day, both of these items are be wrapped in aluminum foil. While this may not be plastic, trash is still trash. Changing to reusable wrapping was a simple fix. I began to wrap the sandwich and apple in the wraps, and after about 2 months of use I can say that I am very satisfied with both of my purchases. They both work the same way, just wrap, wash, and reuse. When wrapping, you have to fold it up in your hands to warm the wax. When washing, I scrub it with cold water and alcohol free dish soap, and lay it out to dry for use the next day.

These products were a great purchase, but there are some things to keep in mind. The initial smell of the products is strong, even if it is a pleasant honey smell. I was unsure about wrapping my foods in the scent, but after time it faded. The scent does not alter the taste of the food. Another thing to remember is that these wraps are made out of wax, that’s what makes them moldable. It also makes them a little bit sticky. When warming the wax, your hands may have a slight waxy feeling on them afterwards. However, this is easily fixable with warm water and soap. I do not recommend wrapping oily foods like almond butter or nutella in them, this could make for a very messy lunch box. Lastly, it may sound like an easy thing to take care of, but you have to be willing to take at least 3-5 minutes every night to wash them if you plan to use them daily.

Besides packing my lunch, I have begun to use them to pack snacks like nuts, crackers, cookies, and other types of fruit. They are also handy to wrap fruit or vegetables that need to be stored in the refrigerator, or to take the place of plastic wrap covering a bowl. There are 3 different sizes to choose from, I use the largest one for my sandwich, the medium one for my apple, and the smallest one for snacks. There are also many different cute patterns and colors available.

Overall, these were a great buy and really helped me cut waste from my lunch. Not only are they good for the environment, they also helped to save money on lunch packaging.
